Preschool

For ages 3 to 4 years of age

Emotional Development

  • Care for own possessions and those belonging to the group most of the time

  • Place some toys, materials, etc., in their proper places without constant reminders

  • Learn and accept new routines and changes

  • Deal with emotions in a developmentally appropriate way

  • Respond to redirection from staff in a  constructive way

Social Development

  • Understand and participate as a cooperative member of a small group

  • Share toys and equipment

  • Make the choice between working alone and in groups and be able to do both at different times

  • Identify various kinds of transportation

  • Cooperate in some group activities and projects

  • Categorize people, places, events and objects

Cognitive Development

  • Recognize basic colors: red, white, blue, yellow, green, orange, purple, blue, brown, and black

  • Identifying a circle, square, triangle and rectangle

  • Determine relative size of three objects in terms of small, smaller, smallest, and big, bigger and biggest

  • Develop an awareness of our five senses

  • Follow a seuence

  • Develop at least three directions

Verbal and Written Language

  • Recognize and say personal information such as home address and telephone number

  • Give and follow simple directions

  • Make up a story

  • Tell a version of a familiar story (ex: The Three Little Bears)

  • Speak in a complete sentence

  • Incorporate new words learned into everyday vocabulary

  • Name basic objects and ideas that are important to daily routines

Reading and Literature

  • Name some letters of the alphabet (upper and lowercase)

  • Recognize some sight words in environment

  • Listen and enjoy being read too

  • Answer basic content questions about stories

  • Relate the endings of familiar stories

  • Recite one or tow simple poems or rhymes

  • Relate basic cause and effect from a story child has heard

Science

  • Participate in planting seeds and caring fro growing plants

  • Learn about some basic changes such as ice melting and water boiling 

  • Construct simple structures using blocks and other building materials

  • Experience and talk about weather changes in a simple way

  • Practice basic habits for good health

  • Help prepare and tell about healthy foods

Pre-math Skills

  • Rote count from 1-20

  • Identify sets of 0 to 5 objects
  • Recognize most numerals from 1-10
  • Set enough snacks or objects on a table for at least eight children
  • Identify objects in terms of relative size (bigger than, smaller than or same size as)
  • Match a number of objects to corresponding items

Physical Milestones

  • Balancing to walk along a plank

  • Pedaling a tricycle

  • Rolling and bouncing a ball - and a few can catch a ball too

  • Holding a pencil with the correct grip

  • Buttoning up clothing

  • Cutting with scissors

  • Climbing a ladder and trees

  • Standing, walking  and running on tiptoes

  • Balancing on one foot for several seconds

  • Using a spoon and fork correctly

  • Building a bridge using three blocks
